6/7 LJ: No circle hooks...

...or bait needed

I decided to head straight out at 4:45 AM. 1-2 foot long intervals made easy in and outs. Dragged a pair of Rapalas. Had a relentless big knothead shadowing me. About a mile out and some puddlers are 20 yards in front of me and sure enough $#!+head is right behind. I throw anyway and as the iron comes by, they light up a bit, but sink out. Decide to wait a bit and see if they pop up again. See some bait jump and a boil. Iron in midair and another boil just inside of where it lands. Three cranks on the Jimmi (that just sounds wrong ) and BENDO! The dog was there through it all and at one point thought for sure he was diving down for my fish. Somehow I got the fish on with a fell swoop gaff, through the fish and in my lap in one motion, 5:45AM Saw a few more single fish boil and had one follow the jig, but nothing more. I decided to head in and saw one more boil north of the condo, that had me throw iron for a few minutes. Back on the beach at 8 AM.

Thanks for the pix VITO!

Fish weighed 21 pounds 3 oz on the beach, I went to Fisherman's Landing for a certified weight for "Capture the Flag" 21 pounds even. YT flag should be mine for now

I also shot the whole thing on video, it is KILLER, just have to get my old video challenged PC to edit and upload it.

Here is a short clip. I have 7 minutes and am trying to edit it and find the right format. I did this same clip, higher quality and it was 22 mb and this is 1/10 that size.

just like I dreamed it

I love it! Just like I dreamed it. Even better it was on one one of the first made. If you can send me a picture I would like to use it for my site. I want to talk to you about making a documentary with your new head cam.

Congrats, Andy, on another nice fish. Sounds like you made a great call heading straight out and hitting those fish while they were on.
Made the pier run only to have 2 dozen perfect greenies go to waste. Fed a number of them to that same (probably) knothead. He is one sly SOB. He'll sink out, head away, or any number of tactics waitng for a person to drop their bait back out...then surprise you. And he's got no fear. Everyday, that one seal is probably keeping a half dozen yakkers from catching nice fish out there. Wish that white from a month ago would take care of this problem.
So we didn't get much use out of splendid bait. Most of the morning we trolled a B/W Storm and a surface iron, as to not encourage or feed that knothead. We only picked up one calico (on the Storm) along the way.
We just watched the video a few times, living vicariously. We felt as if we were going to lose that yellow to that big dog, too, even though we knew you landed it  .

Here is how it ended. The sealion turned and was coming right at me just before color. Thought for sure he was gonna get there before the gaff.

I'll add the sealion footage and piece this together soon.

BTW I am throwing the surface iron on 20# Berkley Hi test. I want some 30# I am really liking this line, low stretch and strong stuff.

That sea lion didn't want your fish, just some camera time. Nice gaff job under the gun.
