Coulda been you were hooking up macks, then something bigger was eating them right off the sabiki, hooks, lines and all.
Depending on how deep you were, there's a lot of toothy little critters down there! If you've ever watched your sabiki in shallow enough (or clear) water to see what's happening, when the bait finds it, they begin to school, likely due to the feeding behaviors caused by one or two other macks. They kinda frenzy around your sabiki, like yellows do to a bait ball. This in turn will look like a tasty little bait ball to a bigger hungry fishy. This is one reason a lot of people hang an iron as the weight on the bottom of their sabiki, because a lot of times a big fish will attack the schooling little guys around your line, and you've got a chance to pull up a big fish on the bottom of the sabiki. There's been tons of 3# macs in the squid zones. They'll ruin a standard sabiki real quick.

I had the same thing happen recently...however, when I pulled my sabiki up, I had two Bonito hooked up with the remainder of my hooks missing..

After losing a WSB last summer on the Sabiki setup I always make sure I use Sabiki's with 30lb on main line and 20 lb to the hook....figure I then have a better chance at landing whatever may grab the sabiki......of course doesn't help when there is sharp teeth involved....did you have a 30/20 setup?

There were some larger Bonito out yesterday. That could have been the culprit.

same thing happened to me 2 days ago...big Bonitos!!..pin teeth on 8# pops, get the bigger sabiki # test always.
i kept every bonito i got for the sweet sweet -the reason why i use heavier sabiki isnt because u can land a bigger fish with teeth ( which is always nice), but because i can unravel a monster birdsnest after 6 squirley spaniards mash up my bait rig ... |
