East Coast Woes
Worldcue® Alert Severity: Informational Alert
Thousands of commercial and recreational fishermen will gather outside the US Capitol building in Washington DC Feb. 24 to protest fishing regulations. Several senators and representatives are slated to attend the event, which will draw participants from across the country. The event will be peaceful. Limited traffic disruptions may occur on roads surrounding the protest site, including Constitution Avenue, Delaware Avenue, New Jersey Avenue and C Street. Background The fishermen are protesting the Magnuson Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, which they claim has caused severe hardship for many small fishing businesses. Under the Act, fishing bans can be implemented on stocks in areas declared to be "overfished" if certain regulations are not met. Advice Allow additional time for travel in the area during the protest.
