Dana Point 11/21 (pics)

launched at 6:45a to breezy conditions. it was cold, about 53 degrees and overcast for most of the morning. i started to troll and cast all the way down the channel, but only got trolling for 5 mins before a small sand bass hit my lure. at least i started the day off good. didn't have to wait to long for that first fish of the day!

wind was still blowing good as i got the the channel where the bait barge is. just let the wind take me for a drift to the harbor opening. made several passes for one decent sandie.

finally the wind let up and wasn't so cold. so i headed off to Doheny. as i got to the beach i ran into a couple of guys i meat at one of Tim's little tournaments, Danny and Adam.

i asked one of them how the fishing was and they told me nothing but short halibut. but not 5 mins after being told that my lure gets hit hard and my pole go's down! being as close to the breakers as i was i decided to tighten down my drag and get this under control ASAP as i didn't want to be dragged into the breakers. got him up and and then moved out of area to safely measure him. landed a 25 inch halie!

once i got him measured and stowed i headed right back and cast again this time hooking into a nice shovel nose guitarfish. gotta love the way they fight! man it was fun!

i trolled the area for about an hour and half for a couple more sandies and another albeit small halibut. i had several short strikes and even had one (had to be a big halibut!) hit my lure and fight me for 2 mins until i had him close to the surface and then he just let go! man was i mad!

the three of us headed back in to the harbor at about the same time. it looked like the bit had shut down off of the beach. now that the wind has shifted i was able to drift back up toward the bait barge. i was right off the point of the sheriff's dept. about 25 feet from the rocks and got slammed again! landed him and measured him at 23 inches! not only did i FINALLY get my first legal halie of the year! (and let me tell you i bought a smoker just for halibut last year! so its about damn time!) but i got two in one day! now that was a fist! never landed two legals in one day. very cool.

after that last one i decided to call it a day around 12:30p turned out to be a rather nice sunny day.

water temp: 60 degrees
fish caught: 2 halibut 23in/25in; 3 sand bass decent size; 1 shovel nose guitarfish about 42in.

lure: Sea Assassin, colors: the assassin and the intruder

iceman -- oh yeah halibut for dinner was soooo awesome! would have been cool if you had showed up. been a while sense we fished together.

matt -- dana can be that way for me too. its why i just never fished it to often. and this was the first time i really got in close to fish for halibut off of doheny. man now that i know what i am doing think i will be heading out there a bit more this fall/winter for some big butts!
