San Diego Bay July 3rd- late report

Last Friday I decided to fish San Diego bay despite the urge to try La Jolla. Turns out it was worth it. My plan for the past month has been to catch a legal Halibut for dinner. Lately I have been catching mostly shorts and lots of bass.
I bought bait since I didn't think I'd get a Halibut trying artificials. It consisted of a dozen or so anchovies and tons of sardines. I peddled back in to the bay towards the bridge. My plan was to fish the channel near it. But, when a dumb Power boater swamped my kayak (so much for being responsible for one's own wake) I had to beach it to get some of the water out of my seat. In doing so my pump sucked in some junk and got jammed. In order to save some of my bait I had to scoop up water every five minutes and add it to the tank. Unfortunately the only thing I had to scoop water with was my dive shoes. It must have been pretty funny to see me scooping water into my bait tank with a shoe. But, hey.. gotta do whatcha gotta do.
Nothing but a lizard fish wanted my anchovies. When I switched to the small Sardines things took off. Between drifting with bait and throwing an Anchovy colored Fish Trap I caught about 20 bass. Biggest going around 3 lbs. (Spottie)
(not this one though)

When I moved towards the channel in front of the Bali Hai I finally got what I was looking for...

It spun my RAM rod holder around 180 degrees when it hit and nearly pulled the rod out of the holder. And to my surprise it ran for about a minute with the drag on my Avet set really tight. After that he gave up and I had him on the game clip in about two minutes.

Total for the day was
35+bass (spotties, sandies, and a few calicos)
1 lizard fish
2 mackerel
1 legal Halibut
