4-21 big bay in the evening

I had one of those days at work so after my last out of the office meeting I made a detour on the way back to the office. Funny thing..... that detour took me right to my house and some how the yak ended up in the back of my truck and I suddenly found myself dressed for fishing. I don't know how that happened. Then I found myself passing the office and ending up at the SI launch.

I hit the water around 4:30 and headed out to a spot I know to look for the flat kind. Lots of large ship traffic on the bay but I finally made my way to my spot. I fished that area for about an hour with only sandies and spotties to show for it. The tide and drift were excellent. I was drop shotting in deeper water and casting to the shallower water. I didn't find any flat fish there so I decided to head to spot two. I did talk to a guy who drove all the way up from El Centro to yak fish the bay. Either that or he just wanted to get out of the desert.

I paddled over to spot two (again dodging the large ships in the bay) and dropped down the lines. Second cast on the eight pound test and I thought I was snagged. Then the snag started to peel off 8lb test. I managed to turn the fish and faught what I think was a good hali for about ten minutes. Then it happened. Two very hard head shakes and POP!!!!!!!!!!! the 8lb gave way. SHIT!!!!! Never did see the fish. I hooked it in 30 feet of water and only got it up half way. Some of the downfalls of the light line.

Continued to fish till dark for more spotties and turdrollers. Nothing else. Great day on the water. Weather and conditions were awesome. So was the stoagie. Fishing was OK. Fish were caught on Gulp baits and my favorite curly tail smothered in butter.

fish count:

11 spotties (nothing to brag about)
5 Sandies (mostly small fish)

All C&R

My transducer is an inside mount so it doesn't read the temp very well. probably low 60's if I calculated right.

great report and pics. Curious...did that Dole boat throw a big wake? My general experience is that the big ships moving slowly are not too big a concern, nor are sailboats. I always look out for the 25+ foot powerboats moving at a decent clip to create a decent wake I would rather take bow first.

Most of the big ships don't throw much of a wake. However.....that Dole ship is another matter. It throws a wake like the big power boats but the waves are much closer together.
