If you own a Hobie or a kayak with a large front hatch, Fastlane sells insulated game bags to store your catch in. They are made just for kayaks. They ought to keep your catch from getting pink gills.

The game clips are used to secure the fish, simply stick it through their gills. Some people drag their catch along side of them, others put the fish with the game clip through them, in the back well of their kayak. They're versatile, so pretty much what ever works for you goes. The game bags are way over $40, maybe you could use a trash bag with some ice packs. The redneck way of storing your catch!

throw the fish in the hull. it will be fine. throw it on ice when you get back to your vehicle if you got a long drive home. if you catch a big one you will probably be satified and ready to go anyway. But what do i no i cant remeber the last fish i caught worth keeping its been so long haha.

Gaff it, bring it on board, put it on the game clip, gill, gut. Then, leave it on deck and throw a burlap sack over it. Keep the sack wet by splashing or dunking it every ten minutes or so. This works very well, especially if there is any wind. You can get the sacks at Squidco for sure, and probably any other tackle shop. Cheap and effective, but definitely get the fish on ice as soon as you can.

Freeze a couple Water Bottles to keep your fish fresh. Also gives you Emergency fresh water if you need it. |

I have been using, and used to make, an insulated game bag inside my hull for many years. Really is a great way to go, keeps the inside of your kayak clean and keeps the fish nice and cold when combined with some ice packs. For the ice packs I use a couple of different things, Techni-ice is sheets of material that absorb water, you freeze these sheets and lay inside the bag. I prefer this method over bottles of water because they form to the contour of your kayak and you can lay them directly over the fish. Just refreeze them at the end of the day. Before first use of these sheets I soak and freeze them then vacuum pack them so that they don't absorb the blood and slime from the fish, this will keep them from getting really stinky.
Another option to the Techni-ice is to do the same thing with a diaper. Soak it with water then freeze and vacuum pack, this is a much cheaper way to go and does work.

For reference I usually use 4 of the sheets at a time for best coverage. With this many when I pull fish out of the bag they are chilled.

Those ice sheets are sweet Jim. The Creative Feathers bags we carry actually includes 1 sheet with the bag. I use that and some water bottles.
