Does anyone use the heavy duty wheels on sand? I've been launching from boat ramps and was gonna try out a beach launch but was wondering if i would need the sand tires. Thanks.

An empty kayak is possible. Can be brutal if you have a pro angler, or much added weight loded on the kayak. The heavy duty wheels plow threw the sand instead of gracefully rolling over. Try it once and youll most likely be making the switch. With the big sand tires and proper balancing of the kayak they pull over sand much easier and be loaded with everything you got.

Where are you considering beach launching? Short distance you can do it. But have to make trips for your gear. Somewhere like newports coast guard station, made me buy a set of wheels after one trip with a pro angler.

I too bought wheels after one trip to the Newport Coast Guard station. I rarely use them elsewhere but it opens some interesting options

My first used PA14 came with heavy-duty wheels, tried it once - very laborious. For a short distance may be tolerable, but that was not the case in my area.
I went with the 42cm Wheel Ezz, expensive, but way cheaper than an injured back. Most go with 30cm wheels, but the larger wheels will roll over any indentations in the sand just a little easier.

It’s also worth noting that while it’s easy enough to get a loaded kayak off the wheels by lifting it up bits much harder to get a loaded kayak back on after a day on the water. Yes you can lean it over and try and get the wheels in but it’s not as easy as it sounds...

Was thinking launching out of Cherry beach or Alamitos bay. I have a 2020 outback so it's not too heavy. Eventually would like to launch out in La Jolla.

Go with the Big wheels on the sand...anything else is just plowing sand...LOL
I roll my FULLY loaded PA14 360 over on it's side all the time at the launch to remove or insert the wheels...

The sand tires were ok for my outback. I didnt have the 2-30 cart, just the regular sand wheels, so maybe thats why. I just felt like they didnt do as good a job in deep sand as the c-tug cart.

The hobie cart stores nicely on the back of the OB and probably other hobies as well, but as others have mentioned, putting the kayak on the cart when you get back to the beach is a 2 person job unless you want to completely unload the kayak before using the cart which imo defeats the purpose. I found myself often just dragging the kayak accross the sand until i got to pavement and then pulling my truck up to that point and loading up because it was too difficult and I didnt want to dump all my gear trying to get the wheels on it.

IMO the c-tug is a better cart and the sandtrax (think tank tracks) are better than the balloon wheels in deep dry sand but its not as convenient to store while on the water because it takes up an entire hatch. The c-tug is easier to load by yourself, but its got its draw backs, because it doesnt utilize the scuppers you have to make sure you strap it at a good point of balance, (i.e. probably right where the hobie cart would plug in), and the strap gets sandy sometimes which annoys the sh*t out of me.

I thought OEX sold these carts but i couldnt find them on their shop online website. Maybe give Andy a call and see.

I have a PA14 and let me tell you, its a tank. I'm good for about 20yards or so with regular wheels.

You do not need two people, or have to flip your kayak to insert your hobie cart. Check out this video

I have a cart that uses the sand wheels, I don't need it anymore.............both wheels are flat, if you're interested I can cut you a deal.

If you plan on doing beach launches I would suggest nothing less than the balloon wheels, using the regular smaller black wheels sucks!!!

What does you current cart look like? is it the hobie plug in cart?
