More Redondo Boccaccio- technique used

Hey all-

I've been asked a lot about the tackle/technique I use to bring in some mega-sized Boccaccio rockfish in the canyon. I put together a video (and I'll start posting more soon so please subscribe!) and would like to share it with you all.

I use a 6" Gulp Curly Tail (Amazon link: https://amzn.to/3mvQ1C5 ) paired with a Boxer 3/4oz jig head ( https://amzn.to/35MO6TS ), 2-3' of 25lb fluorocarbon leader ( https://amzn.to/32CBnRv ) to a sliding 6oz sinker swivel rig. I look for rocks and heavy marks at about 260-300' near canyon walls on the up-current side, drop down, paddle about 50 yards to let more line out, and then I start paddling at about 1kt. Most of the time the bite happens as soon as the lure comes off the bottom into the boccaccio's strike zone, which I've found to be between 5 and 20 feet off the bottom. Once you feel like the lure has come up too far, pause the paddling until you hit the bottom again.

Very cool. Have you found one color working better than the others? How about smaller live mackerel? Do you ever fish live bait or just prefer Gulp cause it’s easier?

I tend to get bit on chartreuse or white plastics better than other colors, regardless of the type of plastic I'm using or the fish I'm targeting. That may be just me, but it might be some kind of visibility thing.

As for live bait, yes I do use them. I've dropped medium to large size mackerel down on the deeper rocks and generally tend to catch smaller rockfish and Boccaccio on them versus jigs and lures. I have no clue why, they are much bigger than the lures I use. I do find that lure and jig fishing is more challenging too, so I do enjoy the reward. However I don't usually skip out on live bait since there may or may not be toothy ones around...
