100lb Thresher

My brother and I paddled out of La jolla this morning around 5:00am. After taking a couple good ones to the chest i paddled straight out passed the reserve booye line. I started trolling a 10 inch mackerl colored rapala on 25lb test north toward the pier. About 5 min into paddeling my reel starts screaming line and my kayak dose a 180. i set the hook the fish is on. Then my line gose limp i wasnt sure if i lost it or not. Then out of no where about 10 feet in front of my kayak the shark topeedos completly out of the water. Immeaditly knowing i hooked a thresher. i fought the shark for about an hour just going in circles. then it started running in toward the beach it took me into the surf. i had to make a quick decision to go in or go out. i put it in free spool and paddled into the beach. i grabed my rod while riding a wave and jumped out in waist deep water. then i just started cranking him in as fast as i could. Grabed his tail and drug it on the beach. the bait was hooked in his mouth. it was a long haul back to the truck from the pier. 1st thresher ill release the rest.

Well done,,not sure if i'd want to fish for sharks from a kayak, make a mistake and it would be a very high price to pay (an arm and a leg ,lol)

Take it easy,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Nice T and great 2nd post

Just a legality question for the masses that I have often wondered about. If you legally hook a fish outside the reserve, and then get towed into the reserve, is it still legal?

I would say no. You would be fishing in the reserve.

I've always wondered the same thing. Pretty sure if DFG was around you'd be sitting on a fat fine and confiscated equipment. Years ago, I hooked into something big (WSB or YT?) that pulled me into the reserve and I busted out the knife and cut the line - didn't want to take any chances.

Nice catch btw...

And yet this last weekend I saw 2 kayaks trolling right through the middle of the reserve. I chased them down... yes in my F'N Dock... and they pretended like they did not understand english, yet they understood when I said DFG!

Idiots need to have their yaks confiscated!

No worries, if you were near the pier you were outside the reserve. But is that my favorite "Made in the USA" Jigmaster you caught it with?

Congratulations on your catch Kenny. And just your first time shark fishing.

This one rivals your 29# striped bass from the surf in Oceanside. What is next on your list A 50# halibut maybe.
