La Jolla - Jan 29 - what a day!

Launched this morning with my buddy Andrea at 7am easy launch. Bait was impossible we tried for a couple of hours without any luck.
Lots of boats and a couple kayakers out there.
Andrea switched to Hookup Bait and Got a 15” sand bass on his first drop. I tried heavy iron and got nothing. Few minutes later Andrea hooked something big, got excited thinking it was a yellow or WSB, but it ended up being a 20+ BSB. Released successfully.

Few minutes go by and still with hookup bait, Andrea’s reel goes crazy, 30 minutes later I gaffed and bled a 28lb yellowtail. His first yellowtail ever.

Can’t wait to go back again. Name: IMG_6830.jpg

Nice, Curious what size Hook up? I have had pretty good luck with them. That is a very cool catch!

I thought you couldn't catch yellowtail on anything smaller than a salami greenback and a 5/0 circle hook??
