From good to bad real quick

This was starting to look like the best week ever. I went to the Fred Hall Show in Long Beach and picked up a nice rod and reel combo. I got a killer deal on it lol I was so stoked I figured I ought to go fishin. I got to La Jolla early and launched before it got light. Paddled out past the buoy and made some squid. I couldn't wait to try out the new rig, so I pinned a squid on an iron and started drifting. Just as the sun was coming up ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I put it in gear and took off on the sleigh ride of my life. That fish was pulling me around for at least 90 minutes. I felt some good head shakes and I knew I was on the right kind. I never felt a fish pull that hard before. It almost yanked me off the yak a couple of times. I just got it to color and it made another screamin run that pulled off at least a hundred yards of line. Finally I got it up to the side of the yak and I couldn't believe my eyes. This YT had to be at least 60lbs. It was huge. By this time my arms were shaking. This was the fish of a lifetime and I didn't want to screw it up. I worked it in close, waiting for just the perfect gaff shot. Just as I reached out with the gaff the fish went crazy and headed for the bottom. As the fish pulled, my thumb jammed between the spool and the frame and there was a sickening pop.

The next thing I felt was a blinding pain in my eye. The iron had popped out and the treble stuck in my eye. Mutha F*@ker that hurt. I paddled in and the Lifeguards called the paramedics. They took me to Scripps and I had to have surgery to get the hook out.

Man, this week started so good and then it just turned to sh!t. I must have some bad karma hanging over me or something.

I thought you were going to say:
I reached for the gaff and the fish made another deep run and took my whole setup.

Glad your okay.

No thanks.....

I generally quit reading when I see "sixty-pound Yellowtail" or "on for at least 90 minutes". That being said, this is the best post for March so far.

Call me an old fool but I know I've seen that picture before (Aug 2006). Looks like April fools day is early this year.
