I can't think of a single time that I've walked into a 99 Ranch Market and not seen Salmon heads.

Ask your local sushi bar for them.
If you are a good customer they will save them for you. |

Since there are no salmon in southern California per say, how does lobster get to eat and like the salmon head.
I guess it is the scent perhaps. My go-to bait is bonito and mackerel. If I catch them, I vacuum pack them in summer for lobster season. So far I had to buy lobster bait only once. |

Just picked up a case and a bottle of juice from Geoff at Lobster port, didn't have the time lately to get out and make bait this year. Runs about $1 a pound. 20-25 heads per case, enough for at least 4 trips with 5 hoops.

I have to think that lobsters being scavengers are opportunists and open to eat anything that meets their criteria of being edible.

I've used both salmon heads and macs and I didn't really see a difference in the catch ratio with either one. However, the best bait is the free bait

Salmon Heads Found
Thanks for all the responses. Found salmon heads at Albertsons for a buck a lb. Heading out to the Cortez Bank on a 4 day dive trip out of Santa Barbara. Plan on hoop netting at night along with day and night diving. Dove at Gull Island on the back side of Santa Cruz Island last Labor Day weekend. Largest concentration of lobster I have ever seen. That area is a no take MLPA. bosco
