Recommendations for First Trip to Baja

Thinking of venturing down south of the border. I have been tempted to sign up for one of Mako Bobs trips, and will probably do that when schedule permits, but thinking of a Family trip down to see whats happening.

Since this is a family trip, its not going to be a hardcore kayaking trip. I may not even bring the kayak, Whats a good starter place to visit, hopefully not too long a drive from north county (Carlesbad) where I am located? Any do's and Don'ts?

I would say San Felipe might be a fun place. Not to far and you can camp on the beach, hit up the strip for food and drinks right off the beach and launch the yak from your campsite. It seems to have a little bit of everything for the family.

Rosarito/Ensenada for starters.

Do
Eat the local food
Enjoy drinks on the beach
Check out the local wineries
Charter a panga for some fishing
Offer to pay your fines on the spot if you get stopped by the policia
Be aware of your surroundings

Don't
Drink the water
Leave your belongings unattended
Flash your money everywhere you go
Advertise you are american
Eat the worm at the bottom of the tequila bottle
Break the posted speed limit or do illegal u-turns
Go into sketchy areas

Renting a Panga, thats a good idea that I hadnt thought of! I'm guessing that I should bring my own gear?

That's really going to depend on the company you book with, some have boat rods. But it's always nice to use your own gear.

Id say DO NOT ask to pay fines on the spot. It may be how it is, but its not the way their system is supposed to work. You are essentially bribing your way out. Its called mordida and is corruption plain n simple.

If pulled over by mexican police, what I say is ok, ill pay my fine. Lets go down to the station where I can pay it. The legitimacy of the stop has to be there at that point. Ive heard plenty of stories of guys saying that and the cop tells them to have a nice day. I have family who have lived in baja for over 20 years, and this was their recommendation.
