You can just go on Craigslist and save money. Here's a listing for a new one for a GoPro Hero.

Xiaomi yi. It's a Chinese action camera, but it works fine. The only down side with it is the lower battery life and less stabilization while recordings.

I think the Hero Session is only $199. Battery isn't removable, so you'll be limited to only a couple hours of shooting. I've been considering getting on as a second GoPro to start up only when I wanted a second vantage.

WaterWolf
Try the WaterWolf from Okuma...I've had some good results from this camera...although is made for mostly underwater fishing use, it works OK above the surface It's super simple with only an on-off switch...But, I'm not sure about the price being lower than the bottom line GoPro.
You're just shooting "home movies" anyway...and everybody get's tired of uncle Allen's vacation movies.

think about
how good the go pro was when it came out. everyone is trying to mimic them. save your money and grab the low line camera. in some aspects it is better. like battery life. feel to jump in if i am wrong? and yes, you can find a good camera for a descent price that will do the same job. if at all possible try and grab a used one for cheap. good luck with that and dealing with the unknown. you might get lucky , you might get taken , or somewhere in between?

Just get a GoPro3 or even a 2. You can get them really cheap. They have a few bells and whistles less but still take great video.

Try going with a refurbished GoPro directly from the company. It comes with the same one year warranty at a greatly reduced cost. Plus the remote is very handy when shooting video from behind you on a kayak. The specifications on the Hero 3 Black+ are as good as the Hero 4 Silver.

I am tempted to get one, but loosing a $150.00 (on sale) or regular $200.00 camera to a snapped line is expensive. |

Get the bright orange floaty backdoor stick-on sponge so that you'll most likely find the camera if your mount fails.
