Try somewhere inside the harbor, try to get comfortable out there at night. Your probably not going to catch a whole hell of alot...but spend the time to refine your tackle and technique, then move on to some better stuff.

Dana point is a nice place to start, short paddle/pedal from the launch. Lots of shorts though...but you might get lucky.

Most guys will spend the $10 bucks to park at the launch ramp and paddle for 5 minutes or so...or if your cheap, launch at baby beach and paddle an extra mile.

Baby Beach or Boat Launch.
Just a heads up...do yourself a favor and stay far enough away from the "short jetty" the one that goes from Doheny out to the harbor mouth.
The lower forms of life hang out and I have seen it get really ugly.

If your comfortable going outside or along the long jetty...you chances will improve. Don't worry...you will not be alone.

I didn't know you could hoop within Dana Harbor. At the very least I was under the impression that it wouldn't be very fruitful. I've been getting to know the harbor pretty well, so maybe I'll take that advice and practice in the Stillwater.

You aren't supposed to fish inside dpharbor. The harbor patrol will pick up your nets and scare you away.

You can, just pay attention to the restricted zones.

Thanks for asking! Hoop netted dana point until midnight last night mainly around the tip of the long jetty. Lots of shorts and a few borderline legal/not legal but didnt want risk it so didnt take anything. Needless to say, im hooked and had a great time! Seeing the bugs in the hoop after pulling is pretty fun even though the majority are shorts. Now i want to explore more areas and work on my bait techniue. Thanks for all the info guys, can't wait until rhex next time.
