11/1 am report
late morning bite, i'd say around after 9am.. absolutely DEAD on the surface in the early morning. i don't think i've seen a more beautiful glassy warm last 2 days at LJ and it's November! spot a boil and get there as fast as you can before they sink out.. 7x salas, in white and booger colors.. slow swim seemed to work and some insane action on the surface iron fishing. yellows blowing up on the jigs and completely missing them, 2 unlucky ones didn't miss the jigs. good grade of fish, both in the low 20#. of course there was only ONE private boater out there and proceeds to gun it into a spot of fish only to sink it down in front of the whole crew.. some really stupid fishermen i tell you, and they always seem to be on a boat! Thanks, Nelz. Still sounds exciting. I didn't get to make it out today. But, a late launch tomorrow is looking good. So, no fish on bait?

I had one on a spanish, but it kelped and broke at the hook. That was my only shot. Did catch two nice lings, 4-5lb, one on a greenie and one on a lizard fish.
Frickin Nelz..... Are you feeling overweight? Do you need to get some extra exercise? Are you tired of being a productive member of society? Well, Nelz's yellowtail chasing workout routine is for you. First he lures us all out to about the 2/3 with tales of yesterday's action. Then, when birds go off in the further distance, he races over to check em. Over the radio he yells "they're here, get over here" followed by shouts and then "paddle paddle paddle". We all race over to find Nelz with a fish but none of us can get bit. The he mosies off a little further, and the exercise repeats. Before I know it, we are out by the 3 mile corner. What was supposed to be a quick morning run turns into an 8 hour, 8+ mile paddle. I'm beat. Long paddle in to hand off the duties to Ken on his way out for his afternoon/evening fish hoop combo. Hope he finds some joy. |

At one point I think my bait was dizzy from turning around so much. I'd go one way, then Nelz would yell from behind me "over here!". About face, get there, nothing, turn back around, then "over here!". Felt a little like Charlie Brown, with Nelz in the role of Lucy and the YT the football.

11/1
So I couldn't resist fishing until thursday. I went unprepared in terms of irons. I had my secret jig and that's it. Well, the secret jig did not work, except for a sculpin, and two greenbacks whcih I used for bait.

Nelz, thanks for all the heads up. Where are the pics. I might be able to make it down there on thursday, but thinking about spending ~$70 in gas has got me thinking twice about it. Fun day of fishing though and good luck out there guys gabe |

sorry guys.. didn't mean to send you guys on the wild goose chase.. in this case, the wild YT chase..
i hate to say it but i saw those birds working down south for about 20mins before i decided to check them out.. from my angle i was pretty convinced those birds were working bait IN the kelp, not off the kelp like we hope for.... i kept watching the action 1/2 mile away in the south until i finally saw the right signs.. i just wished i decided earlier to check them out.. those first precious 20 mins would have probably kept them up on the surface longer for us to get better shots at them.. that guy in the PB running over them probably spooked them into smaller packs of fish instead of being that ONE big school i first came up to. they are feeding on the small anchovies cause that's what was fresh in their belly today.. i'm thinking smaller surface irons like tadyC or megabait might be the ticket cause we swam the big 7X it right through the boils many times... good luck. |

Great stories guys!
I couldn’t get my friend Jose to paddle to the outside. He was carrying the ice cold Pacificos, so I couldn’t let him fall too far behind. Hooped around twenty or so short bugs. Beautiful warm afternoon and gorgeous evening on the water. We got the baby porpoise escort back to the launch. They were playing in our wakes. You could see them swimming ahead with the bioluminescence, an incredible experience. Ken N, good luck on your ten day! |

Way too tired to post after chasing Nelz yesterday. But what a PERFECT day to be out there.
I got my buddy, Greg, out on his first and the maiden voyage of the Prowler 13. Early in the day he'd bird's nested his bait reel but figured if he got a bite he could stop the fish before it got to the mess. Sure enough, he got hammered late in the morning and the yellow busted his nest. Would have been nice to have gotten him his first. On the way in from the NW, Greg, Gabe, and I ran in to the busting yellows. They would come up in the distance and we'd paddle and they'd sink. Finally I just sat at around 95 feet off the CP and waited for them to find me. They did. I threw my 7x white on 30# at a crowd of yellows and one of them grabbed it and headed towards deeper water. It sure was nice to hear line peel off like that - hadn't heard it in forever. After a short fight I landed and bled it without much fuss. Around 12 to 12:30 it seemed to just shut off. Good luck out there. Arne |

Here's the pics of Nelz and crew...
And my big lings. One of them became fish 'n chips tonight, delicious. Interestingly, the smaller one had green flesh while the large was snowy white. Different gender? Or different diet? The second one still had an octopus trying to crawl out of its gut when I landed it. |

Nice prehistoric creatures there Brad. I've never caught a legal Ling but hear from others that it's the best tasting fish they've had.
How's your arms after that paddle yesterday? Daylight savings can be a blessing and a curse. Arne |

Nelz - those fish came up right where we were camped earlier in the day. I lost another after about a 30 second fight when it spit the jig.
I really like that 7x white; is there a surface iron that's a smaller version of that? When the YT are hitting the microchovies I'm wondering if they're looking for something smaller than a 7x and I'd love to help them out with that. Arne |

i think Salas makes a 6X light version? i thought i remember seeing them at Squidco, but now they don't sell Salas... TadyC that is a smaller shorter surface iron, didn't try mine yet.. but yeah, the 7X has such a big slow wiggle and a smaller light jig would have a tighter swim that might match the small bait they're feeding on better.. |
