Lightning, Thunder, Rain, Doppler Radar, Hard Boiled Eggs, and a Yellow
Woke up 3:45, coffee, and the internet, doppler radar specifically.
Showed a thunder storm south of La Jolla and another one north of LJ. Watched for 45 minutes and decide to make the long 20 minute drive to LJ. Get to beach to see about 10 to 20 yaks being rigged with the owners looking at the sky. Pull off my outback and rig it. Lighting bolts start happening all around as well as thunder. hmmm. I never have seen so many scared grown men in my life. Go to the iPhone and get the weather channel app for doppler radar. See that s storm cell is coming toward LJ with lightning. Let’s see I want to fish but it’s not worth my life so I unrig everything and put it all back it the truck. Check the doppler radar again and see the the big storm is rapidly moving and LJ will be cell free in a half hour. Re-rig the kayak and get ready to launch in the weather window. A very cool dude who was waiting out the storm and had to go to work and no longer had time to fish give me his breakfast, hard boiled eggs. He said just dip the peeled egg in the salt water. Very delicious and a great idea, thank you dude, see you out there ….. So I get out to make bait. Most out there say bait is hard to make. I make one perfect greenback and decide it’s time to fish. Ten minutes later, Fish on. Seems like a nice sized yellowtail heading into deep water, deep water means no kelp which is so awesome. He pulls me to about 120 feet far away from the kelp, and as I am bringing him up, I hear Mr Seal coming right at me. Thoughts raced through my head and I hear a little (Yani) voice in my head to go free spool which I instantly did to let the yellow run faster than Mr Seal. No sign of Mr Seal so I engage and start cranking him up with many runs and head shakes. Land him at 8:30 AM. Make to more macs, Strom cloud build and troll them in to no avail. Land to more lightning, thunder, and rain. Yak after yak start coming in. Wild, wild, fun day. |

Way to make it count. I was on the beach this morning, definitely a different weather pattern than I am used to.

Way to go bud !! I was the guy in the blue hat / yellow ocean kayak watching radar with you. I remember you saying "got a green back - going fishing " stoked. I only caught one green back - got mowed over by a boat and chased in by the Lightning !

If there's storms north and south of la Jolla and you paddle out you are an idiot! It takes a long time to paddle in and you are not going to out paddle/pedal any storm. No fish is worth your life!

I took advantage of that information to catch a yellow. I was never in danger as I came in before the next cell came through. |
