Gear question: musky rods?

Does anybody use musky bait cast style rods when targeting yellow tail, wsb or halibut? Pics would pair it with reels similar to avet sx or mx. I am stationed in New England and this combo is used out here for targeting striped bass. I just want to know if this would be a good investment as I plan to return to SoCal waters after my stint here.
