La Jolla Sunday, Whales & Rockfishing
While hitting a rock pile, I notice what could be best described as a huge torpedo, wake and all heading toward me about 400 yards off. Then bam, whale breaches and smacks back down. Time to get the camera rolling. Shot some film of this whale. I think he/she was tearing up the macks at around 100' down, as the birds were picking up the leftovers on the top. A few weeks ago I got rocked by something "unknown" on this particular pile, and after about 10 minutes of fighting, the line snaps. Well this time, Bert hooks up into something similar, five minutes of fighting, and pop goes the hook. We'll be back to this pile and see if we can ever land this "beast" of the deep. Bert got some nice reds, me....tossed back a sheep and that was about it. It laid down nice for a few hours. Better luck next time! |

How do the whales look on your FF?
The only encounter I've had with those grey whales, I didn't have an FF (so I had no idea they were around), and they surfaced about 20 feet off my bow. I damn near crapped my waders. |

I think I got a screen shot of it, I'll try to dig it up and post it this evening. A minute or two after that first shot, I got the shakes.....a bit of adrenaline, and realizing the fact that I was right on top of it, and not behind it. |

Let me be 100% honest with you. This pile is not going anywhere. I have it marked, and I'm sure a 1000+ people have it marked as well. This pile is easily spotted with just about any FF, BW Color, 99 dollar unit. Head out of LJ, then peddle/paddle past everyone. Look for lumps, lumps with "fuzz" around them that "fuzz/marks next to the humps are what you want hit.
