yellow tail set up

im new to kayak fishing yellows. i have a good rod and reel for it but wondering what type and pound line works best. also when trolling live greenies how much line do you let out and do you add weight or the line straight to the bait and no sinker.

thanks for any help

I prefer 50 or 65# braid and a 30# 6' leader. I typically don't use weight unless I am trying to drift along the bottom. A ten count for free spooling while paddling puts the bait where I like it (maybe 50' back?), but the fish don't care too much, they will hit it pretty close in, have had 'em chase it and hit it 10' from the yak!

I'm with DM.
Depending on the season and time of year. During the winter when the bigger models are around, I switch up to 40# on top of a 65 braid. Other than that, 30# on top of a 65#. The difference is diameter between 65 and 50 is so minute, like a 2-3# difference in mono line to make visibiltiy a non-issue. I just feel that 65 cuts kelp a bit faster, and with the abundance of dogs around, the faster the better. My rockfishing rig I run 50, but that's because I'm farther from the kelp.
Go get 'em!
