Allbright knot or Spro swivel

I am fortunate enough to receive a gift of a semi long-range trip, 4 days on Sea Adventure 80. Most of my reels have a Spectra line. I am told that a 100 yard top shot of monofilament is suggested. What is the best connection a Spro swivel or an Albright not? I have never tied an Albright knot before doesn't look too hard but I'm not sure I would have confidence in the knot.
Okay long-range pros let me know what's up.
Thanks in advance!

I'm not a long range guy , but love Spro swivels. Whichever u use, confidence is paramount!

I would go spectra strait to a short leader of floro. With this setup you can switch leaders depending upon the situation.

But if you have to fish mono....spectra to mono to floro.

Use the john collins knot on the spectra to mono/floro, and a seguar knot or something similar/uni-uni/roy rose knot on the mono to floro side.

And yes you need floro!

albright

straight spectra to 5' flouro leader is best, (not slick spectra if fishing near kelp beds), swivel is not needed. if you get some twist in the line, just let it out after the gaff with a 3oz torpedo on it to untwist...or let it out slowly as you are trolling with no hook an it will untwist itself.

I find the swivel to be cool but unneeded, expensive and another thing to break, adds another knot to the equation, and cant get through your guides as easy. And I agree with Ful-Rac, Flouro is a no brainer (way more abrasion resistant) get blackwater, its a shock absorbant flouro. Good Luck!!!!

alberto or "Improved Albright". I use it on all my setups and hasn't failed. even use it (with 4-5wraps) on 50lb mono to 150lb mono connection for shock leaders. its an improvement over the unt - overhand or Uni to Unti connection for shock leaders.

the reason long range and cattle boats don't like braid is because braid will cut people off. its like one of those survival hand saws and slices through the stationary lines like butter. after losing a few rigs to it I've actually not let people fish with me on the beach if they were spooled with braid. lol.

20' floro leader with a John Collins knot or Tony Pena knot. Both are small, very strong and easy to tie! The Collins knot is my new favorite

Use what ever YOU'RE comfortable with. You will most likely be changing out set ups and retying hooks. Can you confidently and quickly tie an albright in the middle of a hot tuna bite? The spro will fit through the guides just as well as the albright, and honestly all you need is 5-6 feet of fluro. Plus you're about 8-10 feet above the water anyhow. Personally, I like the ease of switching to different # fluro if I have to. As far as strength of the spro...well I landed a 70-80+lb bluefin on a 50lb rated spro. So yes they will hold up. Good luck!

Personally, I would forego a spro and just tie a knot.
If you have time before the trip, pick a good knot and practice it until you have it down and are confident in its strength.

Look up the RP knot

You can find it on Utube. I am going out on a 6 day in a couple of weeks. I have been practicing the RP for braid to either fluoro or mono. EZ and it works. I caught a couple smallish tuna on it a couple weeks ago, so I have confidence in it. Like someone said, can you tie in the middle of a hot bite and do you have confidence in it?

Improved albright it's almost the same but you do wrap up and the wrap down at least 5 times......the regualar one you only wrap down. I had way too many slips on the regular albright

Alberto and 6'-8' of 20# or 25# flouro..

I have been on a couple of these trips this year and that has been the go to if you are fishing braid. If you are fishing mono they dont seem to mind the straight 20# mono.. Most of the bait is chovy so we have been using a size 4 hook sometimes even a size 6. Guys are going to tel you thats too small... or oh you can use a size 1 or 1/0 and you know what you can... But you wont get bit as much as the guy using the smaller hooks.. Just keep in mind that you cant horse them in when you use a smaller hook.. I went 9 for 11, capt went 12 for 13, and a buddy went 10 for 10.. all using the small hooks. people asked us what we were using and the gib difference was the smaller hook..

If you happen to get on a boat that has sardines then I would bump it up to a size 1 or 1/0..

Dont forget rubber core sinkers.. And dont be affraid to fish the mega bait on the slide or if the fish are being marked 100-150' down.. I actually marked off 100 and 150 feet with a sparpie on my braid(white power pro #65) this way I could judge where my jig was in the water column.

I've been running my spectra (50# - 65#'s depending on the rig), a boat length of 30 and 40 pound Izor XXX topshot, then fluorocarbon leader - keep 17, 20 and 30 pound with me and usually run 20-pound for the local tuna to 30 or so pounds.

An albright is easy to tie for the spectra to mono and usually you'll just need to tie it before heading on out. It's the double uni for the fluoro to mono that you should practice. Been using just a rods length of fluoro leader over the topshot.

Been out 7 times on the boats this season and this setup seems to work well. One always gets in some sort of tangle and may on occasion get cut off 'cause someone else is on a fish. This way, you can end up with a little less topshot and retie your fluoro leader between stops. On a wide open bite, a fluoro carbon leader is not necessary but when the fish are line shy, it is. Been belly/tail hooking using a number 2 owner flyline hook for sardines and a number 4 for any anchovies. This way the bait runs from the boat and not nosed towards the boat.

With a slightly shorter leader, when the lines gets crossed due to bait running around, you can let your fish run out and your braid will eliminate any other tight mono lines between you and your fish - 'pop' !!!. You won't make any friends but you'll probably not see any of them after the trip anyway.

Another vote for a knot and a short leader. I use a uni-uni, improved albright or tony pena/bob sands knot to join a 3' leader to the spectra. The knot never goes through the guides.

Given the fact that if you use any leader longer than the rod, the swivel will be on the spool, will it go through the line guides with ease??

Here is a little tool that I got which helps in tying blood knots.

that's good insight, now I need a boat.
