When I fish trap hooks, I hook the treble in the same spot as when I butt hook a sardine or mackerel.

I usually stick it right behind the dorsal, right in the meat of the bait.

When evaluating the validity of internet information please consider the source.
Anyone can tell you how to hook a bait.........some people's advice may merit more consideration.. |

I nose hook the bait and my trap hook tag is a little on the long side and I half wrap the tag end around the body and hook my trap hook just behind the anal opening.

I usually hook my trap hook wherever the trap hook is tight and right on the underside of the size bait you are using.
Your just going to have to find out what works best for you. I guess there is no one right way of doing it, it's going to be your way. Between me and the rest of the "sewer" guys, we all fish differently, different hooks, rods, reels, single hooks, treble hooks, line, rigs, trap hooks...but we all manage to catch our share of fish.

Sometimes I trap rig behind the dorsal fin, and sometimes behind the anus. I think it depends on the bait and my mood but it seems like there is not one perfect or correct method. Crazy enough sometimes I won't even run a trap rig at all. Sent from my SPH-L520 using Tapatalk |

sorta thread hack
I've never used traps with anchovies because of the frail aspect of the bait. Would any Experts use a trap on an anchovy?
Just wondering since many of the bait receivers will be slangin a lot of anchovy. |

The minute you stick a trap hook in an anchovie you can consider it dead

Chovies don't hold up well with one hook in them, guaranteed failure with 2. Too much hardware for those little guys. Just my $0.02

I only use owner mutu light circles for Choves. Reason being is well, they're light. I think any heavier of a hook, and you just put an anchor on your bait.

I usually rig my setups the night before and set them for the size bait I expect to catch/buy. I use 2 single wire type hooks. The trap I also like to keep tight enough that it keeps the hook pointed forward. And set the length to generally be just behind the anus. If you hook the nose hook from side to side, you might also want to try hooking the trap in the opposite direction.
