San Carlos Mexico
Arrived Thursday afternoon and headed out for SA point Friday morning. After giving my brother a quick lesson on the electronics and what all the marks were and some practice jigging we headed for the point. Weather was awesome and unbelievably calm for most of the day! Looked like everyone was trolling and catching bonita but I was determined to jig and was looking for marks. Dropped on a few with no luck but knew I would find them eventually. Had a rod rigged to cast with a salsa 7x and got hit the first time I threw it at some surface activity. Ended up with a fat skipjack, Fun fish but wrong kind. Brother and I paddled our asses off and just couldn't locate any YT. I spotted 2 of something big just floating on the surface so we paddled closer. When we got about 10 yards away I knew it was a couple big fish just didn't know what. They went under and we cast to them. He had a waxwing and I had the salsa. As soon as we did a big sail came up and swirled on our lures!! I did not think the sailfish would still be around so I was really excited and wanted to hook up with it. My brother say's to me "If we hook that thing we are in trouble!" I laughed my ass off all day about that and kept throwing at it! No luck but it was cool to have a shot at it! Ended up jigging up a bonita later and then changed location and had a great afternoon bite on some small YT. Small but still a blast. Ate fish that night, nothing better! Day two turned out to be a recoup day if you know what I mean... We did fish for corvina from the shore and caught some toads. Those things are great fun! Day three was awesome... Fished all day jigging up a bunch of the small YT keeping a few and releasing a bunch. Had my first experience with a big sea lion that day... Scared the crap out of me! Thought he was going to jump on the kayak with me! He grabbed the fish I had on and took me for a ride. I was not going to give up my gear so I hung on... Thinking to myself oh sh*#@ now what... He came up out of the water shaking his head with my fish sticking out of his mouth. I finally won the battle (sort of) and reeled in a fish head and my turkey slider... That happened about 7 times unfortunately. Just when I would think he was at another boat and I or my brother was hooked up we would all of a sudden start making a wake as he pulled us in what ever direction he was going! Made for an exciting and educational day for sure! That evening we hit the shore for some more big corvina. In the end we had a fantastic trip! Much of it due to the folks down there sharing information and 4 trips getting the lay of the land so to speak. Here are some pics. Andrew |

Damn, I feel like tossing my gear in the car and heading south. Those are some quality vina. I've been catching the short fin vina here in SD and on the Baja Pacific coast, need to get in the gulf and find those big orange mouth. Great post and photos. Mike

Thanks all for the comments. I know Iceman and a few other have done a road trip to SC. Cool place for sure. It is about a 9-10 hr drive from the far west side of Phoenix.
I am curious as to haw many of you speed jig for the YT in Cali? I don't recall seeing many posts regarding it, seems like it is mostly live bait. Here is a video of a friend of mine down there jigging at the island. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQpBK...em-uploademail Last edited by fearnofish; 12-07-2013 at 01:20 PM. |

I bought a speed jig a while ago and have always wanted to try it at LJ, just never seen anyone do it so I thought it wasn't effective here
