They are good eating but please only keep what you can eat. Most of the saltwater bass take quite a long time to reach 12 inches in length. I think a calico takes 5 years. Not sure if they have done any studies on the calico population in our area but I always wondered if they have gone down over the years.

Calicos are very good eating. Keep a few and enjoy. This is no suggestion to pillage any resource but I have never understood the "sacred cow" status so many angles put calicos in to. Yes, they're a great sports fish, they do grow slowly, and they are available year round. The new rules should offer them more protection, but keeping a few occasionally is fine. Angles that don't CnR any other fish species will criticize keeping a cali. Get real. Mike

The bigger they are the better they BREED, just like all our fish, take what you are going to eat. Enjoy.

Yes, they are very good eating, although you can occasionally catch one that's spent too much of it's life deep in the kelp, becoming somewhat tainted by it.
Other than that, eat what you keep and enjoy
