189 ounces

i finally did it... i managed to get a full 7 bug limit... but the total wasn't 189 ounces... that was just 1 bug.



went bugging. crap tide. 4 guys. 1 boston whaler. 9 nets. lots of beer
result: 25 bugs (top 4 were 189oz, 123oz, 108oz, 93oz) we also loss 3 SUPER MONSTERS (all 10lb+) that did not fit inside of the eclipse net during the pull. they were hanging outside and shot off once they got close to surface.

Nice!!!

A few words of advice for big bugs.

Most people overcook big lobster tails because the try and cook them like smaller tails and then overcook them trying to get them to cook all the way through. Instead of cooking those big tails whole cut them in half splitting them right down the center, and steam them verses boil them, just cooking them enough so it's cooked through.

Also on those big bugs you want to steam the legs and the antenna mounts. Better then crab legs in my opinion, it's actually my favorite part about getting really big bugs.

Nice haul! It seems the reports are slowing down, but the lobsters aren't

Young and small aren't as tough, and have a little bit of a "cleaner?" taste if that makes sense. I think the meat is more rich flavored. I've been sending the giant ones back lately. I keep the 3-4#ers mostly. Same taste as the barely legal but more meat.

the little guys are softer, probably better for baking or grilling... but the butter coated (aka asian house special) lobster recipe doesnt mind the tougher meat... and i used the tail, head, legs, and antenna. not a single piece was wasted for the big bug... the little bugs have legs too thin to get real meat out of so the head/legs were buried in the backyard.

yeah i cut the big guy up into smaller sections to make butter coated lobster.
the legs and antenna were DELICIOUS when steamed. my whole family pretty much came over out of nowhere and said "hey! i heard you caugh lobster! lets make a big lobster dinner!!"

i had a friend who was driving the boat so he was my backup.

on a kayak.. i think you just keep the guy in the net until you are 158% sure that you have him gripped before you try to transfer him into the holding cell.

big bugs have have heads and i just gran their antenna and let them claw the crap out of my hand/wrist while i do the transfer.

Congrats on the big bugs!!

Sorry to hear about the ones that got away. By the way that's why I keep 2 flat nets in my set of 5. I catch more volume in the 3 ambush nets but any of the super big ones that I've caught have come from the old school flat nets.
