La Jolla 9/7 Friday update....

absolutely beautiful day. Launched at 5:30, and saw a big shooting star in pre-dawn, paddled out with Daniel in the dark and we both saw it, thought a good omen.

Then plenty of squid for a couple hours... but absolutely nobody landed any fish other than mackerel. Seriously, I didn't see one YT, WSB, or Halibut.... just incredibly sloooooow, once again. One PB was there all night and had no fish. Maybe 15-20 yaks, 3-5 PB's.

I fished 5:30am to 1:30 pm, and saw nothing caught by anyone. One guy had a fight, and lost it in the kelp after 45 minutes.

On the other hand, some small whales, and jumping little molas (30-50 pounds), and just lots cool stuff, as the water was smooooooth.

But no fish in sight.

I was out there also. Bait was easy, getting something to bite it was hard. I found out that what I thought were whales were actually Risso's dolphin. They don't have a beak like other dolphin, and grow 12 to 13 feet in length. It was the first time I've seen one. They came right by me. It was a good day for a paddle.

Thanks for the current report. The webcam has been showing beautiful weather lately. That's always a plus.

It was good to see you out there again and yes it was very sloooooow.

I had live macs and live squid for bait, but no fish, at least I got some lobster bait

Thats most of my squid ground experience right there, yak and skiff. Did you make it around to the NW corner or did you stick it out at the squid area? Mike

What is the water temp. right now? I'm wondering if last weeks swell turn the water over thus shutting down the bite.
