Late OTW report for Thurs/Fri
First hit SD bay up Thursday night for our best bug night so far. Pulled nets from 7:00PM-10:30PM, ending up with 12 legals. We would've had limits but we split in a hurry when a thick fog bank rolled in. Didn't want to risk losing anything, even though they were crawling good the last hour. When we got home, we got everything ready and loaded for a Dana Point halibut run. After a one hour nap, we were on our way. A very nice day up there yielded close to a dozen shorts, but no legals. Plus a couple of bass and the usual leopard sharks. The highlight of the day was the sleigh ride Aaron had when he hooked something large and powerful just inside the mouth of the harbor. He got towed straight out of the harbor. The red Harbor Patrol boat crew joined him alongside as spectators. After a 20 minute fight on 17 lb line and a 1/4 mile jaunt, all the possibilites had clicked through his head. First, leopard shark or smoothhound? Naw, too strong, too much continued stamina. Big WSB? Had high hopes here, but again too strong for too long. Big bat ray? Most likely. When it finally came up, he was surprised as the almost 50 lb black sea bass floated to the surface. Awesome fight on the bass rod. The Harbor Patrol guys were impressed. After some shoving, the fish finally went down. At 2:00PM, we called it a day. Just finishing all the cleanup chores today from the 2 trips. We're getting too old for this double duty stuff  .
