La Jolla report 5-27

I hadn't fished LJ in a year and a half. Two bad shoulders made a a surf wipeout a scarey proposition. Lots of glucosamine and chondroiten stopped the grinding and the feeling that they were going to pop out of joint.
We're staying at the La Jolla beach hotel in an ocean view room. Launched at a little after 6 and remembered how to time the sets. Got out dry. Went out to 80' depth and caught a couple of olive rock fish and released them. Paddled around for a while and released a few more rock fish. Went or towards some powerboats and decide to toss a mint and white tady 45 around. After a dozen casts the water is full of flying baitfish. I threw the jig past them and as it came near them I was onto my first yellow. It stayed near the surface and I saw other fish around it. It was log barricuda trying to take the jig from the yellow. Then it happened...... A barricuda cut the line at the jig. It was fun while it lasted. I tied on a white and dorado colored jig and caught and released two log sized cudas. We're here tomorrow as well. I'll keep trying...........

Matt

I wheeled the kayak to their underground parking garage and locked it up in a secure Place.

Wow Pat, sounds like great fun. What are the
rates at the La Jolla Beach Hotel? That's the one
right at the launch right?

Our room was 279$ a night. Bear in mind the holiday and the ocean view. We got 279$ and that was with 30% off. The garden rooms go for as low as 140$. Reserve well ahead of time and you may get a discount. We aren't going out of town this year so this is our splurge stay action.

Monday

My wife and I sat on the beach and I got more sun exposure than I was comfortable in repeating. My lips were quite burned even with lots of sunblock.
I'm pretty fair skinned and try to limit repeat prolonged exposure.
I will be out there again soon though.
