Island White, 4-3-12

Fished White Island (Cherry Beach launch) with Landwhale this morning. Launched at 6:15 and back by 11:00. There was a light offshore wind with a bit of a bite to it, but not too cold. Water was cold, though not sure how bad, felt about 56º. Easy launch and compared to Dana a nice short paddle out to the Island. We pretty much stayed on the North East end, at and around the docks.

Steve pretty much took me to the woodshed. For the first 2 hrs he caught fish while I blanked. I finally figured out I was reeling way too fast and Steve tipped me off to let them eat the bait a long time too. The fish wanted it REALLLLLY SLOWWW. Once I slowed it down I was able to find some fish and keep pace with Steve. I think he finished with a dozen to my 5. Damn, I really stank it up. I even threw the fluke for nada.

For baits, I threw a ton of colors thinking that was where I was off. But after I slowed it down, color didn't seem to be that big of a deal. 3" and 4" Flurrys in redfish, baitball, spoiled rotten, and sea food all worked.

It was a super frustrating day, but at least I finally figured it out. Too bad it was after the bite had slowed. Over all though I was glad to have fished with Steve and of course it was better than working.

Thanks for the report, Ed! No, really... THANK YOU.

I live vicariously through you weekday yakkers 'cause I rock the office chair all week.

Pardon the Noob question... where's White Island?

Funny, I live through the weekend anglers posts. White Island is in Long Beach harbor. You Launch at Cherry Beach and it's about a 15min paddle.

I thought that might be you guys out there today. We took the 2 hour tour to see Nacho. Then caught bigger lizzard fish than Butts for the rest of the day.

Wondered who you guys were. How did the wind do later? It sure was mellow for us.

Nothing like a Tuesday Bass Battle! Thanks for the report. I look forward to checking out White Island. How are the crowds down there on weekends?

Were you using any scent?

Not sure how the crowds are on the weekends. I assume there's a lot of boat traffic. And when you fish around the dock you have to watch out for the tenders that come racing in. They seem to come about once an hour. Then there's the barges that come too.

Don't forget to bring quarters too, parking on the beach is all parking meters.

Yes, I did use scent. I use Hot Sauce.

Cherry Beach

ED,

Al and I are thinking of hitting the wall one of these days (begin at dark and fish through till 11 AM or so, then come back) and wondered how much is the parking there, next to the Lifeguard Headquarters building. Someone mentioned it was metered parking with quarters but just how many pounds of quarters should we take. Also the Claremont Street catamaran launch looks inviting but how the heck do you get to it?? Can you drive right to the end, dump the stuff and drive back to a parking lot??

We are seeing light at the end of the tunnel my friend.

Tight lines,

Angel Figueras

Glad things are looking better for you Angel. As far as info for that area, talk to Steve. He knows that whole place. I do know it's 25 cents an hour for parking at Cherry.

Angel the meters take quarters $1.00 a hour easy launch, at the catamaran launch I think it is 10.00 to enter the launch drive or park on the street for free and wheel your kayak down the drive.
