Choosing spinning rods....
I currently have them on some Crowder rods I got while living in Florida, they are in the 12-25lb range. I have (2) Shimano Spheros spinning reels (5000 and 8000) one with 30lb and one with 50lb Sufix braid. I also have a new Okuma Coronado 55a bait runner with 50lb braid. All the reels have 300 yards(+or-) of braid with 30 lb floro leaders. I will more then likely leave the Spheros 5000 on one of the Crowder 12-25lb rods for bassin in the kelp, The other 2 need new sticks. 20-40 or 20-50lb seem to be the popular rods for YT. So I guess I am now in the market for 20-40 or 20-50 spinning rods. I have been looking around and found quite a few in quite a few different price ranges. I fully understand that "You get what you pay for" but I was looking at the Ulgy sticks "Tiger" line $50-$60 range, and they seam to be all the rage in most reviews. I would like to throw some of the lighter irons as well as live bait. Any recommendations on other spinning rods to look at under the $100 each range?? Thanks in advance, -Jay |

Shimano 'Saguaro' 14-30 Med Heavy might be a cheap alternative..

Do you think a 14-30 would be enough for YT and throwing irons?
I was under the impression that you needed a more stout rod to throw irons and to prevent the fish from going deep. Thanks, -Jay |

I have two Shimano Trevalas I'm looking to sell.
I currently use the 6'6 right now to throw Irons, and it gets them out there really well for such a short rod, and It's a great size for the kayak. It's extremely light weight, an although I haven't landed a YT with it yet, I have no doubt in my mind it can withstand it. I've caught a 42# Striped bass and a Football Yellowfin tuna on it. The 7'0" is just as strong, but doesn't have the weight you need to throw Irons, its best suited for soft baits. PS, Fighting fish is more fun on light tackle! Duh! TVS70ML SHM-0209 7'0'' 1pc. If you felt the rod you'd see why. Your on a yak, and if your not flinging a conventional jig stick set up for surface iron you will need some whip.. A lot of spinning set up once you go into 40-50# it is some huge thick spinning set up for surf fishing!?!.. I have Caught & Landed 150# Threshers with this rod.

So I should look more into a 15-30lb range rod in the m/h action.
I will take a ride out to Bass Pro this weekend to see what they have. Thanks Wade for the insight. -Jay |
