I don't think 50 is necessary, but whatever floats your boat.

Yes, our kayaks are heavy on land but the material they are made of is closer to neutral buoyancy that a rock or lead sinker. They will sink if filled with water unless there is supplemental buoyancy. A couple noodles should suffice.

I have also thought about one of those canned airhorns. It would be useful for signaling but I am thinking that it could also be used to displace water. If the kayak is semi- or fully-filled with water and keel-up in the water, you could deploy the airhorn inside the inverted hull. The compressed air released would displace the water in the essentially sealed environment, forcing it out through the hatches. Think of it as an inverted glass filled with water partially elevated out of a sink of water, then blowing bubbles through a bent straw into the glass from underneath. You would not be able to get all the water out but should be able to displace enough to pump out the rest once it is flipped right side up.

Could also used compressed air canisters that are used for cleaning computer keyboards and inflating car tires.

Fish and game might call up the DEA when they look inside that hull looks suspicious.... also, just my theory but wouldn't the kayak ride higher? Making you more vulnerable to getting flipped by choppy conditions? But since they're not In the water yet it probably shouldn't affect the ride. Go out and report back 😃

If anything the kayak would ride slightly, but barely, lower. The kayak and its contents must displace a volume of water equal in weight. The addition of the noodles would add to the weight of the assembly with change to the exterior configuration of the body displacing the water.

Now, if you placed noodles UNDERNEATH the kayak instead of INSIDE, then the noodles would have net buoyancy due to their volume displacing the water, which weighs more per unit volume. The kayak would be lifted to the point that less water is displaced by the hull in the amount almost equal to the total volume of the noodle.

The reason for putting the noodle inside your kayak for safety is, if the hull fills with water, the kayak hull is no longer displacing the water beyond the volume actually occupied by plastic. The noodle inside the hull takes over displacing a smaller volume of water than the hull, but enough to keep the kayak from heading to the bottom.

think of it this way, if you are in a swimming pool and have a pool noodle, do you float higher when you hold the noodle over your head? No, because it is not displacing any water BUT it is contributing a small amount to the "assembly" of your body and the noodle. When you sit on the noodle it is submerged. The weight of the assembly has not changed, but WHAT is displacing the water HAS changed.

Sorry for the long-winded answer, but this is a pretty common misconception and the answer is not necessarily intuitive.
