I launched out of the coast guard station in NPH around 730 am 5-14-2011.
paddled out to CDR first thing to see what was going on. nothing but angry confused seas and some wind. paddled, trolled and drown some bait, metered something but it didnt want to bite threw some plastic for the calicos on the rocks two hooked and released, headed in and loaded up to moved north on PCH but same story all the way to LB so I called it a day. Hope you guys had a better time in MDR.

@ ful-rac - I hope it's cool with you I report on your thread....
I was too tired to type anything yesterday, but here is brief report on our trip out of MDR. I met up with ful-rac and his buddy at 5am at the MDR boat launch. Right after getting out of the breakwater we threw our lures in the water and started to troll. I got four macks in about 40 minutes, and one good hit that did not stick within a mile of the breakwater. I looped back to see if I could get another hit, but didn't. A little over a mile out we started looking for any surface action or birds and we saw nothing. There were no boats around us and any we did see were way off in the horizon. We just trolled around some more; then as if the heavens opened up, we saw birds to the north of us. We took off towards the birds; there was a sportfishing boat looking for cudas too. About a 1/4 mile from the boat I get hit and stick my first cuda. I saw two dogs coming for me so I tightened my drag and hauled it in. I trolled around some more and finally let a jig down and yo-yo'd it. I got hit again and brought in a bigger cuda (8lb). The bite died down at about 10:30. I didn't see much action on the sportfishing boats or pb'ers. Just from observing the 3-4 sportfishing boats and the crap load of pb'ers on the water, I think our group got the most hook ups on the cuda. The wind picked up and we headed in at 11:30. The bite was not wide-open, but we definitely gave it a good shot and for an hour or so it sure was fun... |
