Building your own gaff is easy and simple. They sell the hooks and tuna cord in most tackle stores and you can find the cane around too. I've seen it at the place on India street and at Squid Co. I made a gaff that I love several years ago. I see guys use very thick pieces of cane but I found a very thick walled piece of thin cane at Lowes that was supposed to be used as a tree support stick. Getto I know but the thing has worked great. Most force on a gaff should be straite along it's length not levering out over the side. My little gaff is 36" long, moves through the water easily, and has gaffed YT up to 40lbs abd halibut up to 37 lbs. Mike
