![]() My first setup for the GoPro had my fat head filling half the screen lol. That reminds me, I did not mention that mine was on dead Squid (not really, live Lizzard fish). |

Pond Butts
Greg, Are all of your submittals bottom feeders? You need to change your screen name to HaliKing. That was the smoothest gaffing and landing I have ever seen. You did not even get slimmed. I am not sure your calm holding over the side technique would work for Yellowtail or WSB that seem to protest a bit more to being stuck with a gaff.
I don't seem to have the patience for Hali fishing. No Hali slim on my ride. I am not too big on eating bottom dwellers from our polluted local bays. Give me the open water and Pelagics. The anticipation of the surf launch and landing also adds to the attraction for me. If I want to complete for a top spot next year I guess I might need to learn some patience and maybe a catch a release over the side technique. I am not sure if I could get a measurement without getting slimmed. Maybe, a wooden yardstick would work? Getting a weight without ruining the slim and putting a hole in the mouth might be tough. Net landing and weighing the netted fish could work. The yak cam is a great tool that could make release submittals viable. Thanks for the Hali ![]() |

Kurt, larger Halibut are Pelagics. Some venture out as far as the continental shelf in summer and winter and spawn in both spring and fall in the shallows. Just like WSB they build up their size and endurance in the bays before they venture out into the open water. You don't need to bay fish for them either. LJ is one of the best places around for catching monster versions of them. Just ask most of the Moyer tourney winners. If I could afford the time and money, that is where I would be every weekend. I keep a stick on ruler applied to my paddle and a plastic lip gripper for any fish I am not sure about. Unless fishing a tournament, I try to release everything under 30". I will have to post one of the gripper videos to show how "smooth" I can be

oh, believe me, it was said with all the sarcasm I could muster. It takes me a minimum of 3 tries to get that damn thing in their mouth and hold.
