I once did a reconnoiter and the masses of jumping yellowtails got me excited but then I looked them up and realized is was:

In addition, I think that it is illegal to take any kind boat out in any of our coastal lagoons except for Aqua Hedionda in Carlsbad. Even in that one, non-residents have to buy a permit.

I live there. ABout all that is going on is guys in the narrows by dog beach using a treble hook to snag those big honking mullet you see jumping around - I think they're mullet anyway. Folks say there is some good freshwater bass fishing back by the Mall, but you can't take your yak past the Ingraham Street bridge and honestly who wants to keep anything out of that stinky water way back there anyway? I once caught one of those mullet on a freshwater fly rig using a nymph that looked like a small grub. Tiny, tiny hook. They have really small mouths. Hell of a fight but not worth the effort.
