Freak Waves?

A friend and I were out fishing yesterday 7-6-10. At roughly 10 to 11 am, we both saw a freak set of waves, similiar in size to what a large boat would make, but different....There were no large boats in the area, and none had recently left...If viewed from above, the overall shape would have been crescent shaped approx 200- 300 yards accross, as if a boat took off in a curve, but the wave travelled as a cresent (it did not close in towards itself). The wave also moved in slow motion like white water rivers, or rip current waves...

We were approx 90 ft deep in site of the kelp, drifting towards the canyon...

My thoughts are some strange current or upwelling, maybe a small quake in the canyon?

I did some research and found this....

Just curious of any similiar stories from LJ

It was a school of 80 lb. Yellowtail.

After recently seeing a few of them up close and personal I believe they can move that kind of water.

Could have been a whale swimming just below the surface or a sea monster

And I quote...

My guess is far off boat or real close animal you didn't see. I may be wrong. Stranger things have happened in the ocean. Good on ya for posting about it!

You can do better!!

I knew I would get some drug and smart ass comments!! I got a good chuckle!

A long time Kayaker friend told me of rogue waves off sunset cliffs, but in shallower water, which makes sense...

But if you would have been there you would have thought WTF!?!?!?

Thanks for all comments, even the smartass ones!!!

Hey Rolli

Yeah I think we talked about that wave....

It definately was not normal, as the wave also ran reverse of the swells, etc...

So you were hooked to a bat ray!?

I know later it was cool being hooked up, and I looked over and you were getting towed over to the kelp!!

Nice meeting you...See you again on the water

my guess is the 5.8 (or something like that) earthquake we had. shook us real good up here, but it was based down near you guys somewhere between escondido and the salton sea areas.
