LJ 2/26/10

Went out for some PM fishing action. I could say that I planned to get out there for the peak tidal flow/moonrise between 4 and 6pm, but I just didn't get up in time to hit it early this morning. Oh well, the swing shift was fun. Bait was plentiful. I had a tank full of Spanish and greenbacks after a few minute's work. Some of the biggest Spanish macs that I've ever seen. I also had some frozen squid that I wanted to try. The wind came up about 4pm and I had to come in closer to shore to get out of it. About 5pm someone rang the dinner bell and every dolphin and sea lion in California waters seemed to be feeding around me. The first couple of dogs in the area prompted me to repeatedly real in my baits. After a while it became evident that there was so much bait in the water they didn't even care about what I was trolling. It was quite a spectacle; everywhere I looked there were dolphin and sea lion charging in every direction. Quite a National Geographic-type scene. I came in a little bit to get out of the dog and pony show and I immediately got a hit on the porn star greenback that I was trolling deep. After nearly getting yanked off my ride three different times, I got the thresher alongside. It was still pretty green and not entirely happy. I ended up farming it when I tried to pull it on board. Damn near got bitch-slapped for my troubles. I kept fishing until about 7pm, when a cold offshore wind started blowing. Not wanting to get caught out in the approaching storm, I headed in. Not exactly an epic day of fishing, but it was beautiful out there. We are very lucky to have a place like La Jolla in our back yard. I would hate to lose access to such an incredible place. Makes me want to drive up to the IE on March 3rd and yell at some ignorant clowns in blue shirts. See you there.

That's a good story. Did you end up trying the squid? Every time I've put whole squid down lately the heads just keep taken by the ankle biters and I spend a lot of time putting on new baits.

Nice that you got to pull on something Doug.As for the frozen squid mine allways just get picked at until they are just a tube. That happens with the live squirts too though.

Nice report Doug. I'll be heading out to the bay tomorrow also giving the dead squid a shot there. My guess is that I'll probably get a ray but we'll see.
