Getting Jim the marlin was sorta payback for him helping me win a Club Marlin Tournament a couple years back. I released a marlin the first day aboard a friend's Blackman 26 Express. They did not intend to go out the second day and felt that I had the Tournament locked up with a fish in the last tournament of the year. Problem was, I was competing against the top marlin angler on our coast, a key member of Team Bad Company in the professional tournaments. So long as they were out there, nothing was certain. I frantically dialed up friends looking for anyone that could run my boat while I was on a fish. Most all had other commitments. Jim agreed to go and we released another fish within the first 30 minutes of lines in. Jim readily accepted and adapted to the minimal instructions I needed to give him and we released that fish in 13 minutes on 30 lb tournament, if I recall correctly. My competition released a marlin and had a sword on briefly that day, but my two marlin trumped their one. It was something I was indebted to Jim for and long felt the need to pay him back. Originally he was insistent on doing his first marlin on his tin boat, but as that requirement shifted, I guess my boat became acceptable and I obliged. Took us 3 days of effort, but we had fish on or shots everyday out there. I know skilled anglers/boatmen when I see them; the rest need not apply. |

-I went with the JX because of the taller spool and narrow body with 6:1 ratio for faster retrieve with surface iron. I use this reel for multiple applications, so its maxed out with the options. You don't need to spend the big money and buy it equipped the way I did. -The JX single speed 6:1 Magic Cast would do a great job at a much lower cost. |

Bump!
Doing this again, need a fourth. Leaving OC around 7 pm tomorrow night 10/9. Drive down to SD. Grab a few hrs sleep in the truck and boat, put the boat in the water @ 1 or 2 am. Return sometime Sunday night all bloddy and stinky. We split all costs- usually less than $100. Bring your own food/drinks. Call me if interested. 626-665-4657 |
