Catalina Question - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

I know this is not technically a fishing report, but i consider it a "Fishing Report in Training".
Has anyone ever thought about making a paddle out to catalina. I know nothing about it except for that I would like to try it in the summer.

My plan is to launch out of any harbor that would put me closest to the island, paddle out one day, fish for a few, and paddle back on the last day.
I have GPS, VHF, and cell phone.

Has anybody done this, is it possible, anybody crazy enough to come?

The closest is 22+ miles.. every yak is alot different speedwise.. so u better find another crazy friend with the exact yak and endurance as urself...

btw-what kinda yak do u hav? :twisted:

Just picked up the new Hobie Adventure. Friggen FAST!!! Sold my old outback to get one that paddles better because im movin to Colorado...

Hmmm.. I have a merauder.. it's not that fast..

it's bad enough paddlin out to the kelp waitin for a bud thats slower, could u imagine to catalina!? lol.

I also am interested if any1 has/would atempt this on a calm summer day..?

I've heard of it being done. From what I understand, there were a group of yakers, all in touring sit-insides. They had a boat follow them, just in case of an emergency or something like that. I forgot who I heard the story from. Ryan, you should do it!

Steveoo, is your kayak the 16fter? That thing is fast.

dude I think it would take like 8-10 hours of straight paddleing (if thats possible) and thats if there is like no swell/current/wind... maybe a kayak built for speed could make it there quicker, but a fishing yak would be tuff..I'll stick with LJ and SD and LBC

I have the names of some guys that did the paddle. They also did some other channel island paddles. I'd be interested - I have a Tarpon 160 and would like to go. Just wait for the right conditions and let's do it. Let me know if you're interested and we'll plan it.

Camping and paddling at Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa are also good trips.

Take a look at Hobie Cat's Mirage Adventure...it has a sail kit available. Why make it harder than it really needs to be. 8)

Mike, I was thinking more toward the summer months, when the weather would be a little better. I will definantly hit you up though...

I also was looking at the sail kit for my yak, seems like $260 of ropes and stuff that I will just get tangled up in :shock: Also seems a little like cheating to me 8)

Summer would be good - just watch the weather. I like fall even better. There are some fall perfect days. Let me know when you're ready.

I dunno, Ive done some 20 mile days, shown on the GPS, but Im sure a good portion of those miles were drifting during nap time. :lol:
I will get some serious training days in before I attempt the real thing for sure. Ill probably just do the same training regimin that I am using for when I run the marathon in march, same amount of miles... Also in the new yak it is not tiring at all to go 5-6 mph.
Should be a pretty good adventure though.
Just lookin 4 a story to tell the kids when I have 'em
