For 40#, always an SD jam knot to the hook or jig. The only thing that sucks about tying it onto a hook is that the hook isn't usually heavy enough to swing it around so you have to wrap it by hand. Easier to tie in the darkness, too.

From 2lb to 130lb this knot works. And if you can tie an overhand knot you can tie this one.

From 65lb braid to 40lb fluoro I use uni to uni with minimum of 6 turns on each side. At hook or lure end of fluoro I use a palomar knot 80% of the time an a San Diego Jam 20%.
