Newport, 5-25-17

Launched with Landwhale about 6:45am. It was cool and cloudy with an onshore breeze that came and went. Water was 61º and relatively clear. We worked the normal areas we always do, and Steve had a kick ass day and I got my butt handed to me. Go figure. He finished off the day with 20 (8 legal), I had a grand total of 3 very small bass.

The culprit, losing my underspin after I got the 3 shorts. Steve got all but 3 of his on the underspin. I lost mine about 20min after we started fishing. I could've borrowed one from Steve, but I was getting bit. I just wasn't getting committed bites. By the time I decided that maybe I should get one from Steve I was so annoyed that I just said screw it and we headed in. That was a little after 10am.

That said, everyone should have some Coolbaits underspins in their box.

Thanks for the report. I hope to get out of work a little earlier tomorrow to hit the afternoon bite. Tides4fishing site shows that it should be very favorable in the afternoon/early evening at slack tide. I'm not sure how much I trust the whole lunar prediction model thing but has been fairly consistent in the past.

Wow still only 61 degrees?! Last time I fished about a month ago, I think
The water was actually warmer than that outta Dana Pt though.

I was hoping by late May that the water would be high 60s so that we have a chance at some Bonito. Thanks for the Intel.

Does anyone local to OC sell the Coolbaits underspin? I checked Turners but no dice.

I hit Newport on Friday 5-26- but only got one spotty on a pumpkin seed Berkley Gulp. It was too breezy out in the open so I was hitting some docks around the south end of Balboa Island. Sadly I was too late on the water (0800) to beat the breeze.
