Typically you need line of sight more or less so if you are at your house it may be difficult to pick up traffic. Most fishing traffic is on 72. You can go online and depending where you are ie sd there will be automated radio check frequency set up you will just make a radio call and you will hear your self being played back. If you want a more effective radio check you can go on 72 and ask for one. typically the caller back will tell you their location so you can get a distance as well if you are load and clear etc. There should be. Power settings on your radio so make sure when you are testing if you get no reaponse on the low power you switch to high power because no one may be close by. Good luck be safe. Cheers
