Dana Point 10-29

Got a chance to head out Saturday after about a month of OT.

Started at sunrise, hit the receiver around 6:30 or so, bait was sardines, really nice, good size and vigorous.

Outside the harbor the water was mixed up, confused, going in all directions but fairly calm. Current was running downhill. Temp was 61.4 and dirty. By 10:30 the wind picked up and the white caps made a showing. Around 2:30 or so the wind calmed down and all was calm again.

Headed out a bit for some mackerel which were plentiful but scattered. Trolled one up to Salt Creek for no love. Nothing in the kelp that was hungry enough for the sardines, so I headed south to the condos off Doheny beach.

Nothing there in the areas of the kelp beds that used to be there so headed in close to the beach and started the slow troll back to the harbor.

Got to one of my locations and got picked up by a leopard, hook didn't set though. Dropped down and got picked up again but the same result, hook didn't set. Third time hooked it up, got a fairly large angel shark up to and onto the kayak, thing was big. I removed my tackle, took a picture and tossed it back overboard.

Hooked up again with a smaller Leo, got it up to the yak and released it. Got picked up a couple more times but the hooks didn't set. Was using a very lite setup so the drag would pull out before I could get a solid hook set.

Got back into the harbor at about 6:00pm.

I have heard they make for great fish & chips and have a treacherous set of jaws.

I almost-boated a 6-foot Angel Shark in San Diego Bay...

Got the monster boat-side, saw those teeth, it "chomped" a few times, and decided it might be safer for both of us if those teeth were not in the boat. Hahaha.

It did look that way, kind of an interesting pattern to them too. I hear they are good to eat also... maybe next time.
