Dana Point Sunday 8/28

On the water around 6. Launched from baby beach.

Headed out the harbor along the big break wall. Nabbed a spottie on the way out trolling a deeper diving repala, which was a first for me catching one on a lure like that.

Don't have a fish finder so we were just cruising around for signs of rocky bottom or kelp. Headed to the red bouy then sw from there a few hundred yards. Maybe 500 yards max and noticed the swells were having a deeper trough and saw some of that red crab grass type stuff floating. Water changed color a bit to so figured we would give it a go. First cast got a calico on the sink with a zoom fluke on a sled head. Got one more before repositioning. Made two more drifts over that spot for 6 calicos total and one lost right at the yak.

All fish released.

Had to be home before noon so tooled around in the harbor for a bit with no luck and bounced by 11ish.

After looking at a NOAA chart, it looks like we stumbled on the beginning part of the pipe this day. Kinda funny.

With no fish finder/gps once we started catching fish we dropped a couple pins on Google maps on our phones. When the bite would slow down we would look at how far we drifted and just reposition. Worked alright. If anyone else out there is without gps, I'd suggest trying it out.
