More on Newport

The biggest change I saw today from 2 weeks ago was the water temp was only 66, two weeks ago it was 70. I only saw one small calico caught at the barge today two weeks ago everyone was catching calicos with quite a few keepers in the mix. I fished swim baits for spots and nothing, not even a bump, but the tide was moving much quicker this week. I fly lined one of the mackerels while going back up the bay and I only had to paddle enough to keep my kayak straight. I did hook up with something really big with an anchovy, but I was fishing light tackle for the mackerel and I could never get what ever it was off the bottom, if I put enough pressure to lift it's head it would just start swimming in a slow circle, it finally broke me off when I tightened down the drag. I thought big halibut but some smart aleck kid said it was probably a big bat ray.
