Take it from someone who went sand dunning in the Qatari desert, you can get stuck in soft sand even with great 4x4 (land cruiser and Nissan patrol) those were the best performed over there. You don't need 4x4 in La Jolla. Just keep the wheels rolling until you get to compacted sand. If you get stuck don't force it, reverse few feet and try again.

Go with 4x4. Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

I'd rather go with the 6 x 6 and have room for the kayak.

Rookie mistake! It's better to have 8 wheel drive and not need it then have 6 wheel drive and get stuck!

One thing to consider about speed to get out of the launch is clueless people aimlessly meandering through. Lifeguard stopped me last summer and said 5 mph only, if somebody gets hit they will shut this down he said. When it is really soft and crowded wheels are a great alternate. If you get stuck, don't sit and spin your wheels. Try stopping and spreading a beach towel in front of the tires for traction, or ask for some help with a push before your dig in too deep. Also make sure your front tires are straight, so you don't plow. Somebody posted a milk crate a while back that was cut and layed out in sections to lay in front of your tires.or you could get a 4 wheel drive
On a different topic, playing loud music on shore in the wee hours does endear us to the hotel occupants. Between the shark problems and all else, it may be advantageous to stay low key on the beach.

4x4 with big rims and big tires. I've seen trucks get stuck. Doesn't look fun...
