Linesiders
Headed to Lake San Antonio for some trolling. As for the lake, it has been between 3 to 5% of capacity all year. No hope in sight either. Takes about 30-45 minutes of trolling to get to the dam from the far north end of the lake. If this lake was full it would take hours. When full about 20 miles long. Now maybe 3 miles. Sad indeed. Good signs out there, by the looks of it on the depth finder. Hat Trick... 30+lbs of fish... JK and RHYAK This bite went on for all of Feburary and into March till they Spawned out and now seem to be pretty hard to find. Here is a shot from one of my best days. 7 Fish landed, kept 5 for the family. Quick Video release of one of the fish from that day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fE-o3ejFW_M Full Length Video of the Month of action. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqfmN-Js_74

Jealous! Nice sized stripers. I'd be all over that! One of the tastiest fish I have eaten too. Mostly troll fish?

Nice fish. Hopefully things turn around soon or I am afraid this will be the fate of most our lakes in this state.

Rhyak,
I always thought of striped bass as the yellowtails of fresh water. They are sooo fun to catch. Glad to see the lake is still fishable. Nice job!! |

They are a blast. As for fishable. The only good thing about the lake right now is that boats cant launch so its pretty much a kayak only lake except a few small skiffs that are able to pull it off. RH

Great job on the strippers!
Back in '64 when I was about 10, I washed dishes for a friend of my dad's business so I could buy my first fishing pole ... a Penn 60 reel and 6ft rod. Would hot foot down about two miles to the local bridge and fish for strippers in the SF bay. I would typically get 12-14" strippers, but one day, I hooked into and landed a 23 incher! The bridge was about 30 ft high and I recall pray the whole way up that it wouldn't break off. Hauled it home as fast as I could and my mom stuffed it, based it in butter and lemon, and baked it in the oven similar to the way you would a turkey. Still the best fish I've eaten to date! Been hooked on fishing ever since.

Those are some nice size Jailbirds.
I've caught some smaller versions @ Castaic on the Long Rod, still waiting on a larger one. I was thinking about a side trip to San Luis Res. and "The Delta" this summer while up there visiting friends in Petaluma. Due to low water levels, I hear L.A. County Lakes boat ramps are or will be closed shortly also. Should be Kayaks, Fishing Pontoons and Float Tubes only around here too. Sounds like I won't have to worry about getting or almost getting run over by drunken boaters/skiers this year (like a couple years ago when I was out there last)! FFY |
