Rod selection help - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

My go to halibut rod is a live bait rod. I usually grab my Calstar because that's one of my live bait rods that I have that I like the most. Some guys might prefer a faster action graphite type rod for the sensitivity. Nothing wrong with a Teramar, what's your style? Choose a rod that fits your fishing style and feels good in your hand! Lots of info and suggestions on these forums!

If its a dedicated halibut rod you might want
some thing with a fast taper, not fast action.
This will give a softer tip to handle head shakes
But still have lifting power near the back. A
7' 15-30 or 20-40 graphite rod would be my go to.
I like seeker black steels. If you want extra
sensitivity go with braid. But with braid you
definitely want s softer rod. Mike

The East Coast series Teramar's have a slower action, and in MNSHO are better suited.

I use SE inshore series teramar (blue blank) 76H
7'6" and 15-35lb line rating
It has more moderate action than west coast teramar and like the action better
I have handled yellows to 20lbs on a party boat with rod and it handled well.

Look into a Phenix PSW 760 (7'6" 15-40). This is a great all around rod for rockfish, calicos, and halibut. It also makes an awesome LMB swimbait rod and can handle YT. I landed a 23lb Dorado with one off the San Diego 3/4 day in 2013. Balance wise, I think it would pair really well with the 400te. I have mine paired with a Avet SX.

I've narrowed it down to these rods - from least expensive to most expensive Teramar Inshore Southeast, Teramar West Coast, Terez, and a Phenix. Time to go shopping and actually pull on them. Then I will probably look for them used.

There's a guy that's been trying to sell a Phenix PSW 700m and 760m for a while on bloodydecks. You might want to check that out.
