What did the line look like where it broke. Was it covered in abrasions like sand paper was rubbed on it? Was it a clean cut? Was the end all split up in stringy?

Could have been a mossback ate your rockfish then dove into the rocks where your weight became snagged and broke off.
HA HA HA, thanks just what I wanted to hear. The line wasn't roughed up or shredded a little curled like from streching. I don't think it got caught in the rocks because it happened while it was still pulling drag that was set quite firm, it had the rod pinned against the yak and I was just starting to be able to pull back when it let go. Than again I thought it was pulling quite hard for it to be only the 20 lb line to the weights. The 50 lb line to the hook was just fine.
